Exciting update!
Canada has announced its intention to initiate occupation-based draws this summer, focusing on 82 occupations within five fields through the renowned Express Entry immigration selection system. Moreover, these draws will prioritize candidates possessing a high proficiency in the French language, as per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s guidelines.
The upcoming occupation-based draws will focus on specific fields, including:
- healthcare
- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
- transport
- agriculture and agri-food
To be considered eligible, candidates must have acquired at least six months of continuous work experience within the past three years in one of the listed individual occupations, whether in Canada or abroad.
For a comprehensive list of the targeted occupations, please refer to the later section of this article.
The objective is to enhance the responsiveness of Express Entry, the system responsible for processing applications for various federal immigration streams like the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and components of the Provincial Nominee Program.
The aim is to align Canada Express Entry more effectively with the requirements of the labor market.
The inclusion of francophone candidates is a deliberate measure to provide support to French-speaking communities throughout Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has stated that the mentioned occupations will be targeted this year, with the possibility of additional fields being added as shortages are identified.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser expressed that during his interactions with employers nationwide, the issue of persistent labor shortages was a common concern. The modifications to Canada Immigration Express Entry system are aimed at addressing these concerns by ensuring that employers have access to the skilled workforce they require for growth and success.
Furthermore, these changes not only contribute to economic growth and assist businesses in overcoming labor shortages but also promote the vitality of French-speaking communities by increasing the number of candidates proficient in French. Ultimately, Canada’s immigration system is now more responsive than ever to the country’s social and economic needs.

Canada Increases Settlement Funds Required For Express Entry Immigration
Canada has raised the minimum threshold of settlement funds mandated for skilled worker immigration. In order to be eligible for permanent residence programs, candidates are now required to demonstrate possession of the requisite funds.
These increased fund requirements apply to several programs, including those associated with Express Entry, as well as the Start-Up Visa program and various other programs. However, it is important to note that among the three immigration programs managed by Express Entry, only skilled workers applying under the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades programs need to demonstrate sufficient funds to support their settlement in Canada.
Applicants under FSW and FST that are currently working in Canada AND have a valid job offer do not have to show proof of funds.
Applicants under the Canadian Experience Class do not need to show proof of funds.
How Much Settlement Funds Are Required?
The required amount of settlement funds varies based on the size of the applicant’s family, which includes the applicant themselves, their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable), and any dependent children. It’s important to note that even if the spouse or dependent children are not accompanying the applicant to Canada or if they are already Canadian citizens or permanent residents, they are still considered part of the family size.
