Great news for engineers who plan to immigrate to Canada (Ontario)!
No matter where you may have earned your engineering credentials, the province of Ontario now offers an opportunity to practice professionally.
Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has recently removed the requirement for Canadian experience before licensing, allowing professionals with similar qualifications from abroad to offer their services without any extra hurdles.
This change in legislation gives foreign nationals a chance to demonstrate their expertise and bring their valuable skill set to the province.
Canada looks forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on Ontario’s diverse engineering landscape.
The PEO, a licensing and regulating body for professional engineering in Ontario, is the first professional organization to remove Canadian work experience from its requirements.
The Working for Workers Act of 2023 is a landmark piece of legislation in Ontario which has guaranteed the rights of workers to a fair assessment of their abilities and experience regardless of their place of origin. This legislation helps ensure that all qualified professionals are given an equal opportunity to work and be rewarded based on their talent and capability – not on any arbitrary factors. The Act is an example of Ontario’s commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive society. It shows that the province values everyone, regardless of their origin or background, and wants to ensure everyone can contribute to the vibrant economy. This legislation is proof of Ontario’s dedication to equality for all.
It is an important step towards creating a fairer society in which everyone has the opportunity to reach their highest potential. The Ontario government’s dedication to eliminating discrimination and making sure everyone can receive fair access to regulated professions is commendable and will help create a more equitable future.
With this forward-thinking legislation, Ontarians will have access to a more diverse range of skilled professionals and can be confident that all qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for jobs in regulated professions.

PEO president Roydon Fraser commented: “Each year, up to 60 percent of the engineering license applications that PEO receives are from internationally trained engineers. We’re excited to open the doors and unlock more job opportunities for these individuals, as well as help our province’s economy.”
Overall, this is a positive development that should greatly benefit both Ontario’s economy and its talented international applicants.

Federal And Provincial Immigration Programs Allow Engineers To Come Work In Canada
The Express Entry -Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is a great option for internationally-trained engineers and other foreign nationals who are looking to immigrate to Canada and gain permanent residency. If you are eligible, all you need to do is create an Express Entry profile and submit it to the pool of candidates.
From there, your profile will be assessed using a points-based system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This ranking system takes into consideration key factors such as language proficiency, qualifications, and work experience. The higher the score that you get on the CRS, the better your chances of being accepted for permanent residency in Canada.
When there is an Express Entry draw under the FSW program, the highest-ranked candidates who meet all of the required criteria are chosen to receive an Invitation To Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
This invitation must be accepted within 60 days, and a complete application must be submitted before this deadline. It’s important to ensure that you meet the criteria before applying, which includes having suitable education, work experience, age and language ability in either English or French.

In addition to this option, those who meet eligibility criteria can look into one of three Express Entry programs to apply for permanent residence. For those who have an offer of employment in Canada, employers can also hire foreign nationals through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP). These programs may provide a great opportunity for individuals to achieve their goal of settling in Canada.
The Global Talent Stream (GTS), a part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in Canada, can, under normal processing situations, lead to the granting of Canadian work permits and the processing of visa applications within two weeks.
