The report, published by finance company HelloSAFE on March 9, carefully considered a wide array of criteria when ranking Canada’s best cities for students. After crunching the numbers, Kingston, Ont. emerged as the top destination for budding scholars.
Great news if you’re looking for a city that can provide a perfect balance between education opportunities, exciting surroundings and economic considerations!
Of course there are plenty more cities to explore – but if you’re looking for a good place to start, Kingston and its charming downtown area should definitely be on your list.
It’s no surprise that Canada is a popular place to live and study. With its diverse culture, stunning scenery and vibrant cities, it’s the perfect atmosphere for young people around the world.
To help you decide where you should lay roots in Canada, 47 of the country’s cities have been looked into to find out which offer the best quality of life for students.
HelloSAFE compared four key categories – Quality of Life, Attractiveness, Quality of Student Life and Academic Excellence – each divided into several subcategories to give an accurate picture of what living in each city is really like for students.
For Quality of Life, they looked at factors such as monthly cost for a rental studio apartment in the city center, number of inhabitants, access to nature, climate and
For Attractiveness, what makes a certain city stand out from the rest?
To help answer this question, HelloSAFE looked at some key factors which can influence how attractive a city might be for students.
First, they focused on the number of big cities within 500 kilometers and accessibility by road, train or plane. This helps determine whether living away from home is an option – if there aren’t any nearby cities with easy transport links, then it might not be suitable for those who want to study far from their family. They also considered the unemployment rate in January this year, which gives an indication of the job opportunities available. Finally, they looked at average household income in January this year to assess the overall financial security of each city.
Quality of student life in Canada is an important factor for prospective students to consider when applying to universities and colleges. When gathering information about Canadian institutions, many prospective students look at the number of students within the city, the proportion of students to total population, the number of bars and restaurants within a 10-kilometer radius, and its cultural offering. By looking at these criteria, one can get an idea of how vibrant the student life is in a certain area or city.
For those who love being around lots of people their own age, cities like Toronto and Montreal are great places to study due to their high student populations. With over 60% of Toronto’s population aged 18-34 (compared to 48% nationally), there is no shortage of peers to socialize with. Montreal’s student population is similarly high, at over 55% of its total population.
Academic excellence and cost of studying: The cost of university fees for the 2022-2023 year varies from one institution to another and depends on a variety of factors such as the program or course enrolled in, the length of study period, etc. However, it still remains much cheaper than paying tuition in other countries like the United States or UK. For example, a typical undergraduate degree program at a Canadian university for the 2022-2023 year may cost around CAD 10,000 per annum in tuition fees, compared to its American counterpart which can go as high as USD 40,000.
When it comes to academic excellence, Canada does not disappoint either. According to MacLeans Magazine’s ranking by reputation for 2023, some of the top universities in Canada include University of Toronto, McGill University and University of British Columbia – all consistently ranked among the best universities in the world. These universities offer a wide range of courses across various disciplines such as engineering, business studies, medicine and law and provide an education that is on par with global standards.
